Starter:
Get together with your group from yesterday.
Delegate which group member will contribute what to the presentation.
Make sure you know who is presenting each part.

Part of Speech: Noun
Dictionary Definition:  figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words. It may also be a situation that may end up in quite a different way than what is generally anticipated. In simple words, it is a difference between the appearance and the reality.
My Definition: 
Activity: Find an example of an ironic picture or situation.

 Activity:

1.  Satirical Research Presentation

In small groups, you will work together to create a mini presentation on satires.
Each group will be assigned a topic of either TV shows, journalism, or advertising.

You need to find at least five examples for you category.
For each example, identify how it uses either humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule.
Then, evaluate the critique being made.
Finally, critique the critique.
Essentially, what is effective and do you agree or disagree?


Put this together in a visual aid that can be displayed to the class.

Make sure your responses are thorough and presentation ready.


As a class, we will read Jonathan Swift's Modest Proposal.

As you read consider how this is an example of satire.

Discussion Questions
Analyze the criticism Swift makes of the Irish.
Identify techniques of satire utilized in this essay.
Summarize the essay to the best of your ability.
Determine your opinion on the piece.
